Game v. Central Coast Mariners,  21st November 2009

On Saturday we played the Central Coast Mariners at the AIS Athletics track in Canberra. We were confident of a good game as we had the 6 boys back from overseas duty with the Australian Under 19 team at the Asian Cup qualifiers.

We played a very good first half and probably had more possession than Central Coast. We had a few good chances including a header by Trent Sainsbury from a cross by John Martinoski. At halftime the score was 0 – 0. Our coach, Gary van Egmond, was pleased with the way we were going particularly as Central Coast is currently on top of the League and most of their players are a few years older than us.

We went back on after halftime determined to keep a clean sheet for the first time this season. We again had some chances particularly by Aaron Peterson, Mustafa Amini and Kamal Ibrahim. However, Central Coast had obviously come out aiming to put more pressure on us, which they did, but our keeper Lawrence Thomas made some awesome saves to keep us in the game and still have a chance of winning. We went close a number of times and so did they but the score ended up being 0 – 0 at full time.

We were disappointed with the result as we thought we could have won it but we were happy that we got our first clean sheet of the season. We play Adelaide this weekend in Canberra. We are feeling pretty positive about this game as we drew with them a couple of weeks ago in 40 degree heat in Adelaide. With the home advantage, and hopefully cooler conditions, we have a great chance to get a win.
