What are the differences in acne between males and females?

Acne affects young men and women equally, but males are more likely to have more severe, longer lasting forms of acne. This is because male sex hormones (androgens) increase in males (and females) during puberty. In males, this then increases the size of sebaceous glands, oil secretion and skin cell production. Acne normally settles for guys in the early 20s.
